Time to Recharge: Supporting VSI Carers
Last Friday, the VSC was delighted to welcome a very special group of guests to the Club: carers supporting former serving personnel who have sustained very serious, life-changing injuries during their military service.
The guests are part of the No-one Left Behind initiative, which provides practical, tailored support to Very Seriously Injured (VSI) personnel and their families, helping them overcome challenges, pursue personal goals and access experiences and support that can make a meaningful difference to their lives.
Each of the carers was a recipient of a VSC Respite & Welfare Break, provided through the Club’s charitable activities in support of serving and former serving members of the Armed Forces community. The two-night breaks include accommodation at the Club, all meals and a visit to a London attraction, providing recipients with valuable time away from the pressures and responsibilities of everyday life.
Caring for someone who has sustained a life-changing injury can place enormous and enduring demands on families. For many, caring becomes an integral part of daily life, often continuing for years and bringing challenges that can be difficult for others to fully appreciate. The opportunity to have time away from those responsibilities, to recharge and to meet others with shared experiences can therefore be invaluable.
It was a privilege to meet the carers and hear some of the powerful stories behind their families’ journeys. Their experiences brought home not only the lasting impact of serious injuries, but also the extraordinary commitment of the family members and carers whose lives have changed alongside those they support.
We hope to share some of these individual stories in future articles, giving a voice to the families behind them and highlighting the difference that initiatives such as the VSC’s Respite & Welfare Breaks can make.
