Secretary of State for Defence Joins Pride Reception at the VSC

The Secretary of State for Defence joined Armed Forces Personnel at the Victory Services Club for London Pride.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt joined the LGBT+ members of the armed forces and civilian defence personnel at the VSC for a Reception before the Pride parade on Saturday 6th July.

The Victory Services Club was filled with over 250 LGBT+ military personnel and civilian colleagues from the MOD Police, DSTL and SSAFA who enjoyed some food and drinks before the event. It also gave personnel from across the country the opportunity to meet and discuss their experiences of service life.

The Armed Forces has long recognised the invaluable contribution LGBT+ personnel make to defence.

This year, all three services are featured in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers for their commitment to the LGBT+ community.  The MOD also recently announced new measures to create more modern and flexible accommodation, including allowing cohabitation of same-sex couples, in MOD properties.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt said:

“The participation of our LGBT+ service personnel in the London Pride parade is a fantastic reflection and recognition of the value they bring.”

“The Armed Forces is an open and welcome employer, and we are absolutely committed to increasing diversity across the forces to better reflect the society we serve.”

“Today is the day to thank those LGBT+ personnel who work so hard to serve their country, and I was honoured to meet and march alongside so many of you today.”

The CEO/Club Secretary at the Victory Services Club, Air Commodore Nigel Beet CBE RAF (Ret’d) said “The Victory Services Club was delighted to host the pre-march reception for the MOD’s LGBT+ community.  The Club welcomes all members of the UK Armed Forces and provides free membership to them, while they are serving”.
