A message from the Chairman

Dear Members,

I hope that your Summer is going well and that you have many enjoyable days and events to look forward to.

The purpose of this letter is to explain several changes which will be brought about in the Club in the coming months.  These changes follow careful consideration by the Board of Trustees and are based on detailed work by the Club’s Senior Management Team and our current national economic position.

In our private and business lives we have all faced increases in costs since the Spring.  You will completely understand that the Club too has faced cost increases and some of these have been dramatic, including a forecast increase in our in-year utility bills of £250,000. The hospitality sector continues to be an extremely competitive market, and from the start of the financial year, the Trustees have tried hard to make a difference to all staff by enhancing their remuneration offer, to help with the recruitment of new colleagues and to retain our existing wonderful staff.  In response to increasing food costs, the Club wishes to maintain the very high quality of our menu, rather than reduce the quality of the offer. Maintenance of the building is also becoming increasingly more expensive due to several factors, and we remain committed to keeping a high standard of presentation and cleanliness in the Clubhouse for our members and guests. The Board of Trustees, with the Senior Management Team, have always worked hard in the best interests of all our members to deliver Value Service and Courtesy.  Our subscriptions are extremely reasonable in comparison to almost all the London Clubs and our bedroom prices are very competitive compared to other London Clubs and Central London hotels.  However, while we wish to offer value, we are unable to fully absorb all the increases we are facing.

It is against this backdrop that the Board has taken the difficult decision to raise some prices:

  1. The price of a Full English Breakfast will increase by £0.45p from 1st August 2022.
  2. All hot beverages in the Coffee Bar will increase by £0.45 from 1st August 2022.
  3. Bedroom prices will increase by £5 per room, per night from 1st September 2022.  All existing bookings beyond the 1st September will be honoured.

To support our excellent Housekeeping and Front of House Staff (including our Porters) from 1st September 2022, the Club will introduce a Discretionary Service Charge on bedroom bookings.  This will be £2 for every type of single bedroom and £4 for every type of twin, double and family bedrooms, irrespective of the length of stay.  All this money will go to the members of the Housekeeping and Front of House Teams, except their respective managers (for whom separate arrangements will apply) This Discretionary Service Charge will be added to your bill.  If you wish to have this line removed from your bill, or if you wish to see it increased, then please speak to the Front of House team.  Should you wish to make a different donation to the generic Staff Fund an easy-to-use donation station (on a ‘tap and go’ basis) will shortly be installed in the Club.

You will be pleased to note that there will be no increase in Club subscriptions until 1st April 2023, and nor will there be any changes in the New Joiner’s Fee.  Additionally, we are not anticipating having to increase our beverage prices before January 2023, but this will be kept under review.

We hope that these changes will enable us to continue delivering the standard of service and enjoyment that you have come to expect from us. We have tried to make them proportionate and fair and hope that we can continue to welcome you to our very special Club.

Yours sincerely,

Major General Seumas Kerr CBE
