Meet Our VSC Winner

Member Mrs. Doreen Calver and her husband John Calver were announced as winners of our VSC August draw. Doreen and John were delighted to win a night’s stay at the Club, dinner for two and a bottle of house wine, a tour of the VSC garden and kitchens, finishing their stay with breakfast in the morning.

Doreen and John have been members of the VSC for six years and traveled from Ipswich on Thursday 3rd September. ‘We travelled down from Ipswich on Thursday and we are very impressed by the Covid-19 safety measures that have been put in place around the Club. John and I felt very safe thanks to the Perspex screens and strategically placed, hand sanitiser around the building.

As part of the prize we were given a private tour of the VSC’s roof garden. We met with the Executive Chef Paul Mattocks who was a brilliant guide and we were amazed that they have been able to grow so many herbs, salad, and vegetables in such a restricted area. Paul extended the tour and we were able to see the Club’s event rooms, which we did not even know existed, let alone available for Member hire. The Carisbrooke Hall is the largest and has a beautiful chandelier as the center-piece and then we were shown the brand new event room which has only recently been refurbished and Paul said would be ideal for small dinners and member celebrations. Finally, Paul showed us around the Club’s kitchens, both John and I found this fascinating as we are both interested in cooking.

We enjoyed a delicious meal in the restaurant, John had the Wild Mushroom Tortellini to start, Beer Battered Cod Fillet with Chips as his main and finished with Strawberry Cheesecake. I had the Chargrilled Chicken Caesar Salad, followed by the VSC Fish Pie and I also had the Strawberry Cheesecake for dessert, all enjoyed with a lovely bottle of House wine. As usual the service was excellent and the food delicious.

We had a fantastic night’s sleep and love staying at the Club, it is an oasis of tranquility in this mad world! The Club is offering breakfast via an a la carte menu and they have recently introduced a healthy breakfast option of smoked salmon and avocado which looked lovely. 

We cannot wait to visit the VSC again soon and will be staying in October, we are especially looking forward to being able to achieve the things we planned to do in London prior to Lockdown and we look forward to taking advantage of the VSC’s fantastic offers in the future for these'.
