VSC History Part 3

Arthur was greatly helped by James Aratoon Malcolm who was born in 1866 in Bushire (Iran) and was of Armenian descent.  He was educated at Oxford University where he gained Civil Engineering degree. He took a great interest in the club until his death in 1952.

In 1936, the Club changed its name to the Allenby Club as a memorial to Field Marshal Lord Allenby who had been its president since 1933.  In launching the club as his National Memorial in October 1936 the Secretary of State for war contrasted the club the memorial to another military hero, Lord Nelson” I cannot think of anything he (Allenby) would have disliked more than to have found himself on top of a column  …you could not have a finer monument to the memory of a finer man.
